Unique Studio/Event Space Share at Dobbin Project Space

03.28.13 | Permalink | 1 Comment

We are seeking a new studiomate starting May 1st at our work & event space. Please spread the word to creative and socially-engaged people you know!

Dobbin Project Space is seeking a new resident to join our creative work and event space in Greenpoint/Williamsburg for May 1st, 2013. Artists, curators, programmers, writers, community organizers, freelancers, and entrepreneurs are all encouraged to apply. Residents use the space as a shared art studio/co-working space Monday through Friday. On weekends, Dobbin Project Space hosts socially engaged art programming and events; we especially encourage events proposed by residents.

The physical space is a storefront gallery with large white walls, ample light and wood floors. Walls slide to cover storage areas, leaving a beautiful work and event space. The gallery has two connected spaces: one room with street access and a large picture window and another large back gallery with windows facing a courtyard garden. There is on-site storage for all residents, multiple power outlets, track lighting, a private bathroom, microwave, fridge and modular work desks. There is room to host meetings. Note: we can accommodate occasional messy work and fabrication, but this space is not ideal for someone who uses oil paint, resin or other toxic materials regularly.

Dobbin Project Space was founded in September of 2012 by three socially engaged artists with interdisciplinary practices: Laura Chipley, Mary Jeys and Sarah Nelson Wright. Our projects include The Brooklyn Torch and The Newtown Creek Armada. All three co-founders work in the space alongside residents: Jen Galatioto (Greenpointers); Amanda Goldman, freelancer and curator; and Amanda McDonald Crowley, independent curator (Public Art Action).

Yoga for Artists
with Emily Haydock, writer and yoga teacher

Whether you’re a professional artist seeking inspiration and support or simply looking to invite more creativity into your life and the way you live it, yoga can help you! This 90-minute workshop will explore yoga poses and meditation to open the channels that allow the creative force to flow through us. Using visualization, sound, breath, and movement, we will work with the chakras as metaphors for various aspects of our being as we focus on grounding ourselves and dissolving fears and other blocks. This class is for anyone who wants to nourish their inner artist in mind, body, and spirit. No specific creative or yoga background/experience is necessary, but you do need a mat!

When: Sunday, February 10th, 3 p.m.
Where: Dobbin Project Space, 50 Dobbin Street, Studio 1A, Greenpoint
Cost: $10 (bring your own mat)
Please RSVP to dobbinprojectspace {ATT} gmail [dot] com to reserve a space.

The space is located in a unique studio complex called Dobbin Mews on Dobbin Street, situated between McCarren Park, Williamsburg and Greenpoint, nearby Nassau G and Bedford L trains. Resident rent is $330/month, including all utilities (heat, AC, Internet, electricity). The new resident must commit through Oct. 1st, 2013.

NYC Movie Theaters

01.26.12 | Permalink | Comment?

I put together this short list for my documentary and experimental video students.  It’s a list of smaller movie theaters in New York City where you can see documentary, experimental and independent film and video or other innovative film programming.  For the most part, it doesn’t list festivals.  I’m sure it’s not exhaustive, so feel free to add other theaters/spaces you know in the comments.

I’m posting here in case anyone else is interested.  Please feel free to share with your NY friends or use as a resource if you live here or plan to visit.  (Thanks to Nathan Kensinger for helping me put this together.)
